The Markham FHT is once again offering the 50+ Wellness Program!

During this 75 min health-promotion and disease-prevention educational session, you will learn about your wellness needs after age 50, from our registered dietitian, clinical pharmacist, nurse practitioner, occupational therapist, social worker and registered nurse.

Topics include: dietary requirements after age 50, cancer screening tests, positive lifestyle changes, looking after your mental well-being, and much more!

Time: 7:00PM – 8:15PM

Location: Aaniin Community Centre

This session runs just once per year, and space is limited. You may bring your spouse or friend/family member with you, but you must register and have your space confirmed before attending. Confirmation will take place by email.

Screening Tests

Diabetes Blood sugar test every 3 years www.diabetes.ca
High Cholesterol Cholesterol panel (total, LDL, HDL, ratio) every 3-5 years www.ccs.ca
Osteoporosis Bone Mineral Density test over age 65 www.osteoporosis.ca
Breast Cancer Mammogram every 2 years until age 74 www.cancer.ca and www.cancercare.on.ca
Cervical Cancer Pap test every 3 years until age 70 www.cancer.ca and www.cancercare.on.ca
Colorectal Cancer Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) or colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy beginning at age 50 www.cancer.ca and www.cancercare.on.ca
Prostate Cancer DRE or PSA (speak to your provider for individual recommendations) www.cancer.ca
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Abdominal ultrasound  for males age 65-75 www.canadianvascular.ca

** Any of the above screening tests may be done earlier or more frequently based on individual risk factors and previous test results as discussed with your primary care provider

Nutrition

Calcium: Women – 1200 mg  per day of elemental calcium (from all sources) www.osteoporosis.ca
Men – 1000 mg per day (from all sources)
Vitamin D3: For osteoporosis prevention: 800 – 4000 IU per day www.osteoporosis.ca and www.dietitians.ca 
For cancer prevention: 1000 – 4000 IU per day www.cancer.ca

Immunizations

Tetanus (Td): booster every 10 years; one life-time dose of Adacel® (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) to replace one of the Td boosters; publicly funded
Pneumovax: for pneumonia protection. A one-time vaccination over the age of 65; publicly funded
Influenza: seasonal vaccine every year; publicly funded www.health.gov.on.ca

Lifestyle

Alcohol: limit intake to 1-2 drinks per day or a maximum of:
9 per week for women
14 per week for men
Physical Activity: 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous aerobic physical activity per week www.csep.ca/guidelines

Sun Protection: SPF 30 or greater all year round
